Local Power (Local Inclusion in Assistance and Reconstruction Projects)

En Español

Owner

This project was developed at the TechCamp in Santiago, Chile on November 20. TechCamp Santiago had over 100 participants, including a few US technologists, over 20 Chilean Tech community representatives, and approximately 80 NGOs and civil society organization representatives from across Latin America. Small group discussions between technologists and civil society organizations were used as a means of developing valid problem definition statements.

This project evolved into Listing and Certification of Local Resources and Service Providers and has further expanded as part of the Entrepreneurial Response to Disaster model developed under the Relief 2.0 initiative with the collaboration of the National University of Singapore, Stanford University and other partners around the world based on the Haiti and Chilean earthquakes experience.

Summary

Local Power: There is a need to eliminate the exclusion of local actors from assistance projects.

An information system would be created to identify local needs and service providers, and better allow the recognition of local talent. It would link up local groups, international organizations and the government. In Haiti, for example, survivors would get training and be able to participate in their own reconstruction.

Through the identification of the necessities of local training and of possible service providers a information system is generated that links local actors with assistance proposals and that allows local talent to be recognize, validated and used.

The actual project definition completed at Tech Camp is available here.
