Post-Disaster Psychology Volunteers
This project was developed at the TechCamp in Santiago, Chile on November 20. TechCamp Santagio had over 100 participants, including a few US technologists, over 20 Chilean Tech community representatives, and approximately 80 NGOs and civil society organization representatives from across Latin America. Small group discussions between technologists and civil society organizations were used as a means of developing valid problem definition statements.
Proposed by: Sebastian CHARON TORREALBA
A solution to coordinate offers/volunteers who can provide professional; psychological services with the social needs. Also, the solution would, using some kind of database that would be easy to use and update, be able to track the hours the volunteers/hours of services provided by the volunteers and the individuals or groups assisted. One of the overlooked aspects of any large-scale catastrophe is the psychological impact, which often extends beyond the immediate zone of the disaster, can last for years after the event if not treated and includes low to medium level depression and PTSD. These effects are felt both by civilian victims and the emergency workers and other responders who worked on the relief efforts.
The originator of this idea is the Director of a Program of Volunteer Psychologists of Chile. The idea is for a Database or solution of some kind to Share Professional Time. There is a need to better coordinate professionals’ time to address social needs, and a broker is required. The tool would be a web platform like Facebook or Twitter. This could help optimize donated time by professionals such as himself.
Who Needs This?
There is a general need for these services from many different kinds of social organizations that need consulting or actual provision of services to individuals, as well as the specific needs following the February 2010 earthquake.
Use Case/User Story/Scenario
An individual who has lost his home would need several kinds of professional help. A local (or geographically distant) psychologist is looking for a way to voluteer to help with these kinds of problems.
The solution would allow the individual answers to a specific set of questions, for example, about his or her family, how the loss of the house affected his or her employment and what problems he or she have encountered in finding alternative accommodation for the professional to understand the possible needs of the individual.
Similar projects and Resources
There is a site called www.ayudando.com but it is too general and is not appropriate for our situation because it only is for volunteers for other non-governmental organizations/non-profits.
Daremos las definicaciones de problemas a un grupo global de progamadores voluntarios que se llaman “Random Hacks of Kindness” quien crearan soluciones a estes problemas desde el 4 hasta 5 de diciembre.
