SMS Startup Now

(Microbusinesses in Reconstruction and Developing Countries)

En Español

This project was developed at the TechCamp in Santiago, Chile on November 20. TechCamp Santagio had over 100 participants, including a few US technologists, over 20 Chilean Tech community representatives, and approximately 80 NGOs and civil society organization representatives from across Latin America. Small group discussions between technologists and civil society organizations were used as a means of developing valid problem definition statements.

The point of contact for this project is Noel Dickover ( or is a secondary contact. He is US-based and can be reached via email or cell during RHoK at seven-zero-three--two-three-one--three-nine-one-two, or via twitter at @NoelDickover. Noel may be available via Skype (NoelDickover) Friday evening, late Saturday evening and Sunday. The other point of contact is Ricardo Faundez of Digital por Chile, he led the group that created this project. Will be available for questions and support they need via Skype (rfaundezen) and via Twitter @rfaundez on Saturday morning.

Loss of opportunities due to lack of real-time information to apply for funds/competitive business opportunities. This is especially harmful for micro-entrepenuers during reconstruction efforts just following a disaster. Dollars going to outside contractors at the expense of local businesses significantly weakens reconstruction efforts. The problem is that many NGOs, small businesses, financiers and entrepreneurs lack information, and many times they lose out on proposals because of this. Cell phones can help solve this problem. The telephone companies need to publish a “cell phone code”, and apply “in/out” technology.

Description of Need

The need is to centralize information (available in various media) and put it at the disposition of the focus population (startups, microbusinessmen, etc.) through a homogeneous medium that is low-cost and easy to access, such as a cell phone.

Who Needs This?

NGOs dedicated to entrepreneurship, entrepreneurs, financiers/promoters of our programs

Use Case/User Story/Scenario

In Chile, one example would be:

  1. Traditional media pursue the creation of a cell code for the entrepreneurs project
  2. WAP push from the telephone company
  3. Interested parties respond in order to provide a data (?) base
  4. Information flow (?) in/out
  5. Financing by the headquarters ??? of Telefonicas (phone company)
  6. Develop use of the Web to complement (transition to new ???)
