Problem Set Format

How do you track student attendance in near real time, and build case history of student attendance/absence using mobile phones?

Summary of the Problem

I, Joey, spend hours every week traveling from one end of Mumbai to the other, collecting student attendance/data via a time consuming manual process, and eventually returning to the central office to input the data into our computers via ANOTHER manual and time consuming process. Essentially, I need to do the following:

  1. Collect attendance
  2. Keep a history of that attendance
  3. Store the data in an easy to manage database
  4. Do it fast
  5. Protect against teacher error/fraud
  6. Do it all for less than extant courier fees of Rs. 2000/school = Rs. 14,000 per year

Summary of the Proposed Solution

  • Develop simple roster application with the following functionality:
  1. Enroll student with baseline bio data (photo?)
  2. Take attendance on given day by marking “present” or “absent”
  3. Integrity checker on application selects one randomized photo to be snapped every day from student marked “present”
  4. Sends attendance logs to a centralized database
  5. Store photos locally for later inspections

Technology to Solve the Problem

Areas of technology that you believe have the potential to solve this problem? (eg mobile devices, social networks, geospatial technology, etc.). As the proposed solution could be used?

  1. Upgrade teachers’ phones to Rs. 3,500 programmable (Android?) phone w/2.0 mp camera (amortized over two years, the phones fall within budget)
  2. Application sends SMS logs to central database via MyNap
  3. Export logs to Excel
  4. Write a thank you note to consulate for Techcamp Mumbai!

What other information could help technologists working on this idea? Seva Mandir uses photos of classrooms to check teacher attendance in Rajistan.

Follow-on Actions

Once a potential solution has been developed, what is your plan of action to implement it? Should arise as a series of steps and goals, preferably together with actions assigned to a specific group of people.
