TechCamps, an initiative led by the U.S. State Department’s Office of eDiplomacy, are a series of technology-focused, capacity-building workshops in cities around the world. Designed specifically to empower civil society groups, TechCamps help in advancing U.S. interests of creating stability in a region, spreading democratic values, and fostering economic growth and transparency, which ultimately leads to better governance. During the TechCamp process, civil society organizations work closely with local and international technologists to define their biggest challenges and pair them with low cost, easy to implement technology solutions.
Techcamp London: Open Data for Global Development, marks the 28th TechCamp in a series of events around the world, organized by the U.S. Department of State.
This Techcamp will target the role that public, accessible, and useable data can have in advancing global development goals and increasing the commercial success of local entrepreneurs. More than 40 civil society leaders from across the globe will work with data experts, tech industry leaders, and government representatives to discuss case studies of successful integration of open data for improved sustainable global development. Discussions between governments, CSOs and technologists will center on how to best leverage viable global development data and open government practices. Technologists will define real solutions using tools like SMS, data mapping, social media, crowdsourcing, mobile technology, and other open source tools. These civil society organizations will then be able to use these tools to identify their open data needs, effectively request information capital, grow their networks, apply new resources, and keep pace with the changing world.
