Problem sets and solutions provide a method that details everything you need to get support to a critical problem to which an NGO or a grassroots organization faces. Los conjuntos de problemas y soluciones suministran un metodo que detalle todo lo necesario para conseguir apoyo ante un problema critico al cual una ONG o una organizacion de base se enfrenta.

The problem is how to use mobile technologies to improve internal organizational communications with populations/staff in rural areas.

Summary of the Problem / Resumen del problema

Esta es una descripcion de la situacion problematica. Que tipo de personas desempeniaria mejor su mision si este problema se solucionara? This is a description of the problem situation. What kind of people mission better if this problem is solved?

The people who attended this session have multiple backgrounds, including human rights, education monitoring, and working to provide services psychology patients. Each one of these has a unique challenge, but is operating with common communication problems, so the goal of the session was to level-set expectations and describe the best practices in terms of approach.

Because of the comparative connectivity and resource availability of rural areas, our group focused on lowest common denominator (LCD) mobile platforms and, in particular, SMS. Given relative agreement, we moved directly into a discussion of SMS and began exploring methods of managing the problems associated with remote information collection and management. In specific, we focused on issues of verification, the mechanics of data collection (personal and technological), how to drive value for an organization (saving time, money, effort) through SMS, and security/privacy in reporting.

Because of the different levels of focus and preparedness of the participants, the entire group participated actively, although we focused specifically on the problems of Transformemos Honduras.

Because SMS was included (and/or implied) in the session title, there was solid consensus that SMS was the right platform. We, as a group, began mapping out communication workflows and then conducted a small training using an information management platform built to manage SMS communication.

We focused on using FrontlineSMS, tied to e-mail and using web connections to push messages into pre-existing web platforms.

All of our problems were solved using existing technologies, although several may require customization to directly connect platforms.

Once a potential solution has been developed, what is your plan of action to implement it? Should arise as a series of steps and goals, preferably together with actions assigned to a specific group of people.

The first step to implementing this program is two-part: (1) connect existing technological teams of FrontlineSMS and Transformemos Honduras to design a specification for connecting SMS forwarding with their web platform; and (2) fundraise for and organize capacity buildings training focused on the programmatic design elements of effective SMS communication to the team of Transformemos Honduras and focal points/hubs (?) of member organizations.
