WikiGreen for Climate Change Visualization

En Español

This project was developed at the TechCamp in Santiago, Chile on November 20. TechCamp Santagio had over 100 participants, including a few US technologists, over 20 Chilean Tech community representatives, and approximately 80 NGOs and civil society organization representatives from across Latin America. Small group discussions between technologists and civil society organizations were used as a means of developing valid problem definition statements.

The point of contact for this project is Noel Dickover ( or is a secondary contact. He is US-based and can be reached via email or cell during RHoK at seven-zero-three--two-three-one--three-nine-one-two, or via twitter at @NoelDickover. Noel may be available via Skype (NoelDickover) Friday evening, late Saturday evening and Sunday.

Need better ways to help people visualize information about the environment and climate change. The lack of effective visualization hampers understanding about the environment and climate change, diminishes the effectiveness of initiatives, and leads to duplication of efforts and resources. This is especially important in places where tsunamis and hurricanes may be posing great threats due to climate change.

The project, "Wiki Green" or "Wiki for Climate Change Visualization", would make information on the environment and climate change available on one integrated platform, using wikis, icons and various media. Presently, there is a lot of information but it is poorly understood, and leads to a poor use of resources. The challenge is to better visualize a lot of existing, but boring and text-based information, and making it more educational and entertaining. It may also help galvanize a country at risk for hurricanes or tsunamis to take more active disaster risk mitigation measures.

Description of the Need

The writer proposes a wiki that:

  • groups environmental issues,
  • creates distinct layers of information,
  • adapts information to various formats such as written articles, audiovisualmaterials, photos, etc.
  • enables users to generate content using resources already available on the Web.

Tracking of temperature changes with trends in Tsunamis in a specific region

Use Case/User Story/Scenario

  • User at a university uploads information on a Wiki that visually captures climate change data per region.
  • Allows updates over time, that allows trends data to emerge.
  • Users could re-interpret” a written article into an “infographic.”

  • Agrupe problems/conflictos medioambientales o de cambio climatico;
  • Crea “layers” distintos de información;
  • Adapta información a distintos formatos de comunicación – escrito, audiovisual, fotografía, etc.

Quien lo necesita?

Grupos medioambientales y de cambio climático

Caso Tipico

Los usarios pueden generar contenido utilizando los recursos ya existentes en la Web; por ejemplo, un usario podría “reinterpretar” un documento escrito como infográfico.
